Russell has been a victim of Lung Cancer. But he doesn't let it control his life. He says, "Only God is in charge!" That is why Russell makes a wonderful addition to our team!

Russell and Marti Young have two sons, Bradley, 16 and Brycen 9. They have been married for 20 years. Although it was the last thing he would have planned, Russell was called to preach about 5 years ago. Immediately he was preaching at different locations and was soon called to a local church. He and his family were able to stay in their own home and things seemed to be going according to God’s plan. But God’s ways are not our ways; and two years ago, tragedy struck as Russell was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Day-to-day life was changed dramatically as he and Marti visited doctors and sought treatment and hope for their situation. They left their children with relatives and visited the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa and began aggressive chemotherapy. They eventually came back to Hickory to continue treatment. Even though they did not understand God’s purpose, they chose to trust Him. As always God has proved to be faithful through good times and bad. The family was supported by friends, family, churches and organizations spiritually, financially, etc. His church was very good to him and he was able to go back to preach. After some time, he felt his work was over there and resigned as pastor. God uses everything for His glory – even cancer. Russell has been able to minister to others who are hurting and suffering and has offered hope and love as he visits and carries out his calling. Living with cancer is not easy and daily, even moment-by-moment, dependence on the Lord is necessary for strength. This is what carries Russell and his family through in all situations. Romans 8:28 says that “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose” – even cancer.

Russell is working to grow and help with Psalm 23 Ministry, as he feels that this is something needed during the time of sickness. Russell shares the same vision and burden as Tom, that this is what God would truly have him to do!
